Waterstop for Use With Concrete Construction Joints

Waterstop is a sodium bentonite based hydrophilic type waterstop, designed to stop water infiltration through insitu concrete construction joints. Sodium bentonite swells when in contact with water, forming an impermeable barrier. The swelling property of the product allows it to form a permanent pressure seal within the concrete joint, thus eliminating water migration over or along the Waterstop

Waterstop is designed to replace passive PVC/Rubber type waterbars, thereby eliminating the requirement of special pieces and seam welding.

Waterstop is not designed, nor intended to function, as an expansion joint sealant.

RECOMMENDED USES

Use Swelling Waterstop to permanently waterproof horizontal or vertical construction joints, pipe penetrations, between precastelements and other concrete joints. Not for use at expansion joints. Suitable for use in sewage and containment structures. May be used inareas with chloride or sulfate contaminated soils and in contact with sea water.

INSTALLATION NOTES
Easy to install where conventional waterstops would require complex fitting.
Fix in position using adhesive or masonry nails at regular intervals.
A suitable adhesive should be used to fix the seal to metal or PVC pipe surfaces.
On irregular surfaces ensure that direct contact is made between the seal and the substrate along the entire section.
The seal can be exposed to wet site conditions for up to 3 days prior to the placing of concrete, provided it has been coated with an inhibitor to protect it.
A minimum of 70mm of concrete is required on all sides to encapsulate the seal within the concrete.
Joints can be secured by welding, glueing or overlapping.
Swelling is slower in cold conditions and faster in hot.
Typically 28 days to reach full swell in Standard Swell Waterstop.

Installation with swelling tape adhesive:
The substrate must be clean, dry, and free of loose particles.
Apply the swelling tape adhesive in the centre of the joint in a uniform bead (width 8-10 mm) out of the cartridge onto the surface.
The subsequent concrete covering must be at least 8 cm on all sides.

Once the swelling tape adhesive has been applied in the centre of the joint, the bentonite swelling tape is placed on the adhesive and gently pressed on, moving it slightly back and forth, crosswise to the longitudinal axis.
When the tape is fixed, the adhesive should slightly ooze out on both sides.
This guarantees a complete fixation.
Ready for use after 4 – 6 hours (depending on weather conditions)

Installation with swelling tape grid:
The substrate must be clean, dry, and free of loose particles.
Place the bentonite swelling tape in the centre of the joint.
The subsequent concrete covering should be at least 8 cm on all sides.

Position the swelling tape correctly.
Push the fixing grid firmly onto the bentonite swelling tape.
Fasten using corresponding nails and either by hand or mechanically using a bolt-firing tool.
The distance between nails must not exceed 20 cm in the longitudinal direction of the swelling tape.

Both, straight and angle joints need to be butt jointed.

The joint areas must be form-fit in order to avoid any discontinuity in the system.

In the case of butt joints in the straight line and the use of swelling tape grids, the joints of swelling tape and swelling tape grid should be offset.

Premature swelling caused by contact with water must be prevented. Swelling tapes which have already started expanding must be replaced.
